Celebrity beauty secrets: from the weird to the wonderful

Here are the truly bizarre beauty secrets the celebrities swear by...

They may be drop-dead gorgeous, but celebrities do have a few skincare tips and tricks up their sleeve. From natural teeth whitening methods to bird poo facials and ‘highly trained medical leeches’, here’s what we’ve discovered about the famous folk and their weird beauty regimes…

Did Sandra Bullock learn this perfect skin secret on the set of Miss Congeniality? Perhaps…  ‘I didn’t realise that putting haemorrhoid ointment on your face is acceptable in the beauty business,’ Sandra told The Sun. ‘But apparently, butt cream helps lines around the eyes!’

Ever wondered how Gwyneth Paltrow gets her amazingly white teeth? Coconut oil, that’s how. ‘I use coconut oil a lot,’ she revealed to E! News. ‘On my face, my skin and in my cooking. And I just started oil pulling, which is when you swish coconut oil around [in your mouth] for 20 minutes… it’s supposed to be great for oral health and making your teeth white. It’s supposed to clear up your skin, as well.’

Yep, Gwyneth isn’t afraid to try a bizarre beauty treatment – even if it involves bee stings. Shudder! When she spoke to The New York Times recently, Gwyneth confessed she’s turned to bee stings as a beauty treatment.
She said: ‘I’ve been stung by bees. It’s a thousands of years old treatment called apitherapy. People use it to get rid of inflammation and scarring. It’s actually pretty incredible if you research it.’ She did later admit that, ‘Man, it’s painful.’

Suki Waterhouse pours Coca-Cola on her hair. She once told Us Weekly: ‘I don’t like my hair when it’s washed – it’s fine and limp – but Coca-Cola makes it tousled, like I’ve gone through the Amazon or something.’
WHAT THE? It’s believed Coca-Cola could bring you tousled hair because it brings out the natural curl. How? It helps the hair cuticles contract, appaz.

Talking about how she gets her hair so damn near perfect, Salma Hayek told Buzzfeed: ‘You can put guacamole in your hair. Not with the rest of the stuff, but you can take avocado and put it in your hair. You can take, believe it or not, mayonnaise. Mayo is really good for your hair. Another thing that’s really good for very dry hair is (are you ready for this?) egg yolk. One thing you can do to take away some of the stench is to take the skin of the egg yolk out, and put a couple of drops of lemon in, but it’s still going to stink. Coconut oil! That smells good and is really good for your hair, but of course it depends on how dry your hair is. If you want shine you can rinse with apple vinegar.” Mmmm.

Ever wondered how Catherine Zeta-Jones gets such picture-perfect teeth? Strawberries! She told Wales Online: ‘The juice or pulp of strawberries contains malic acid which serves as an astringent and can lighten surface stains. Pineapples work the same way,’ she said.

Friends has reportedly claimed the former Spice Girl is a fan of the “bird poo facial”. Yep, a chatty friend revealed to the Daily Mail: ‘When Victoria was in Japan she was admiring the local women’s clear skin and discovered it was down to these facials. She was intrigued and when she got back to the US she found that some New York beauty salons now offer the treatment. She tried it and loved how great her skin looked. She also uses a cream derived from nightingale poo at home.’

Yeah, you read that right, this skin care tip is in fact Nightingale poo. We investigated and according to the newspapers, VB is a fan.According to the founder of the treatment, Shizuka Bernstein, the reason why people purchase the £135 facial is because nightingale poo acts as an exfoliate, which then brings out the grimy stuff which builds up in the skin.

If you’re a blonde, you’ll know that hair can turn dull over time. Supermodel Eva Herzigova has her own genius method to brighten her locks.. A boozy one. In a conversation with the French Marie Claire about drinking, Eva said: ‘My only daily vodka is the one that I use it to lighten my blonde hair… and it really works!’
Ah. Hic!

The Divergent actress told People that the secret to great, wrinkle-free skin is very simple: ‘I can tell you, all of my friends in their mid-thirties and early forties laugh a lot – and have no wrinkles. That’s the secret to good skin, I swear! Everybody has this big thing about chemicals and facials, but (all they need) is just laughter.’
Right, who’s coming to a comedy night with us?

What is Scarlett Johansson’s celebrity beauty secret? Is it expensive lotions ‘n’ potions? No, it’s cider vinegar. She once revealed to Glamour magazine: ‘I researched natural skincare and found that apple cider vinegar is really effective. Using it as a toner can be harsh, but if you have breakouts it can be really healing.’

It’s been claimed Demi Moore travels thousands of miles to get the perfect dewy skin – and leeches. Urgh. The actress has admitted that she goes to Austria to let ‘highly trained medical leeches’ suck the toxins out of her blood. She told talk show host, David Letterman: ‘I feel like I’ve always been someone looking for the cutting edge of things that optimise your health and healing.
‘I was in Austria doing a cleanse and part of the treatment was leech therapy. These aren’t just swamp leeches though – we are talking about highly trained medical leeches. These are not some low-level scavengers – we’re talking high-level blood suckers.’
