Want glossy hair but don't want to buy a load of expensive potions? Here are some things that are in your kitchen, but need to be on your hair...
- Coconut Oil
- Apple Cider Vinegar
WHISK SOME EGGS
Not just for omelettes, eggs can also give you shiny, glossy hair. Because they are a good source of protein and they contain fatty acids and lecithin, eggs help repair damaged and dull hair by adding moisture and shine. But it’s not as simple as just cracking an egg in the shower — we suggest mixing one egg white, one tablespoon of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey until you get a smooth paste. Apply this paste on damp hair and scalp, then cover your head with a shower cap for about 30 minutes. Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and cool water.
WARNING: Don’t rinse with hot water as it will clot the egg, and yes that’s as gross as it sounds.
Is there anything coconut oil can’t do, we hear you cry? Exactly. This works-for-everything product is ideal for getting your hair gorgeous and glossy. Plus, it helps that the smell is divine. Coconut oil helps restore moisture to dry and damaged hair, in turn making it shiny and healthy. For best results, just apply straight to the hair and use as a mask, leaving it on for 30 minutes then rinsing it off with a mild shampoo.
It’s not just for glugging, y’know. Beer is excellent for shiny hair — and with minimal waiting time. The proteins (hops and malt) in beer help repair damaged hair cuticles and provide nourishment to hair follicles. This in turn adds glossy shine to your hair. Directions: Wash your hair with shampoo then apply flat beer from the root to the ends. Afterwards, massage the beer thoroughly into your scalp using circular motions. We recommend leaving it for about 5 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
We were dubious at first, because ewww. But it works! Mayonnaise has amino acids, protein and antioxidants in it, which makes your hair strong, soft, and shiny. Fill a cup with Mayonnaise — half a cup if your hair is shoulder length or shorter — and apply it to washed, damp hair. Get the shower cap on and watch an episode of Eastenders, and BAM! your hair will be ready to wash again and you’ll have new softer tresses.
Salma Hayek recently swore by this! When asked how she gets her hair so shiny, she said it was all down to the trusty avocado, and if there’s one person you can listen to, it’s Salma! Why is it so good? Avocado contains nutrients that will deeply moisturise and nourish your hair. This in turn will make your hair smooth and shiny. The method, should you give it a whirl, involves mixing one mashed ripe avocado with two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil. Apply this mixture to damp hair from the roots to the ends. Cover with a shower cap and rinse and shampoo your hair 30 minutes later.
Much like the above, banana works well — especially when you mix it with avocado. Mix in half a tablespoon of almond oil and massage this paste onto your scalp and all over your hair. Cover your head with a shower cap for 30 minutes or more. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water then shampoo your hair.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Apple cider vinegar is perfect for your hair because it helps remove built-up residue that makes your hair look dull and lifeless. Plus, it can help treat dandruff, itchy scalp and frizzy hair.
Mix together equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water. After shampooing, pour the mixture onto your hair and massage it into your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cold water.
You could add in the juice of one lemon if you want to improve the scent.
